Abstract

We examined the locations of the terminal nuclei of the accessory optic system by injecting HRP solution (Sigma, type VI) into the vitreous body of the Sprague-Dawley rats. The results are summarized as followings.
1. All the HRP-positive granules were found in the contralateral brain.
2. The medial terminal nucleus was in the ventromedial midbrain tegmentum between cerebral peduncle, substantia nigra laterally and mammillary peduncle, medial lemniscus medially. The ventral end of this nucleus was found to surround the surface origin of the oculomotor nerve.
3. The lateral terminal nucleus was located just ventrolateral to the medial geniculate body. Some HRP-positive granules in the superior fasciculus of accessory optic system were found on the surface of the cerebral peduncle.
4. The dorsal terminal nucleus was located just dorsolateral to the medial geniculate body, ventrolateral to the superior colliculus.
